How successful we are with plants is largely a matter of choosing the right ones in the first place. You need to think carefully about your lifestyle, schedule and personality, for example how much time and effort are you willing to devote to caring for your plants. The trick is to choose plants either indoor or outdoor variety that match the home environment you already have.
Choosing plants or creating a garden definitely involves a balancing act between aesthetics and practicality.
Some of the key questions to ask yourself before really investing in plants or a garden:-
a) Evaluate your house:
- What room do you plan to put the plant in?
- How hot is that particular space either a room or courtyard area during the day?
- How big is the space and do you know how big the plant eventually gets?
b) Evaluate your décor:
- What is the overall decoration style/theme of the room or outdoor space?
- Is there an architectural element in the room/outdoor space you want to disguise? (You can do that with a large plant).
- Is there something in the room/outdoor space you want to highlight, such as an interesting piece of furniture or artwork?(You can do that with a plant strategically positioned nearby).

c) Evaluate yourself:
- What kind of parent to a plant do you have the time or inclination to be?
- Are you out of town often or forgetful by nature?
- Do you have a complicated daily routine that doesn’t really allow much time for hobbies?
- Have you maintained interest in hobbies for a long time, or do you tend to lose interest quickly?
If you analyze the above questions honestly, you should have a sense of how ‘plant or garden dedicated’ you can realistically be.
